How to Evaluate Whether Artificial Grass Is Safe

Before purchasing non-infill artificial grass, consider the following checklist.

1. Verify Raw Materials

Ask whether the fibers are manufactured from virgin polymers rather than recycled mixed plastics.

Virgin materials generally provide:

  • Better durability
  • Greater color stability
  • Lower impurity levels
  • More consistent environmental performance

2. Check for Independent Laboratory Testing

Request reports from accredited third-party laboratories covering:

  • VOC emissions
  • Heavy metals
  • PAHs
  • Phthalates
  • REACH compliance
  • RoHS compliance

Independent testing provides stronger evidence than manufacturer marketing materials alone.

3. Inspect the Backing

Premium backing systems should appear:

  • Uniform
  • Flexible
  • Durable
  • Free from excessive adhesive residue

Strong solvent odors from the backing may indicate lower-quality manufacturing.

4. Assess the Odor

A premium product may have a very mild polymer smell immediately after unpacking, but it should not produce strong chemical, solvent, burnt, or rubber odors.

If strong odors remain after several days of ventilation, additional investigation is recommended.
