Three Factors That Determine Whether Artificial Turf Looks Natural

1. Number of Colors

Two-tone or three-tone yarn can create more visual depth than a single-color yarn.

Common combinations include:

  • grass green + yellow-green,
  • dark green + medium green,
  • grass green + olive green,
  • green + subtle thatch fibers.

For residential landscaping, a restrained three-tone design can work particularly well because it provides variation without making the lawn look artificially patterned.

2. Thatch or Brown Fibers

Thatch-colored fibers can imitate older or dried grass and add visual variation.

However, more thatch does not automatically mean more natural.

If the percentage is too high, the lawn may look dry or poorly maintained. If there is very little variation, the turf may look more like a uniform green carpet.

Rather than specifying a universal 10–20% ratio, it is better to evaluate the actual color blend and finished appearance.

3. Surface Gloss

Gloss is often overlooked.

Highly reflective fibers can produce noticeable highlights under direct sunlight, making the material appear more synthetic.

A matte or lower-gloss fiber finish can create a softer visual effect.

This is especially important for:

  • residential gardens,
  • villas,
  • balconies,
  • rooftop landscaping,
  • hospitality projects.
